Got a scam letter? Here's what to do

  1. Don't use anything printed on the letter. No phone numbers, websites, or QR codes from it.
  2. If you sent money, call your bank now, using the number on the back of your card.
  3. If you shared personal information, get a recovery plan at IdentityTheft.gov.
  4. Report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and mail fraud to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
  5. Talk to someone you trust. The AARP Fraud Watch helpline is free: 877-908-3360.

Common questions

How do I scan a piece of mail?

Tap the big “Scan mail” button. Lay the letter flat in good light so the words are easy to read, and tap the round button. You can keep snapping one piece after another. MailPal reads each one in the background and tells you what it is.

What does “Envelope” mode do?

Use it before you open anything. Switch to “Envelope” at the top of the camera and take a photo of the front of the sealed envelope. MailPal looks at who sent it, the postage, and the design, then tells you “Open it”, “Toss it”, or “Shred it”. Bulk-rate advertising dressed up as a “Final Notice” gets caught here.

A letter has two pages or writing on the back. What do I do?

Scan the first page as usual. Then open that piece from your mail list and tap “Add the back or another page”. MailPal reads all the photos together as one letter.

What do the stamps mean?

SCAM means MailPal matched a known scam pattern. CHECK IT means something looks off and you should verify with a number you already trust. SALES TRICK is a real company using pushy, misleading mail. BILL is a real bill. LEGIT means it looks genuine and is worth keeping. JUNK is ordinary advertising.

MailPal says it is a scam. What should I do?

Do not call any phone number, visit any website, or scan any code printed on the letter. Do not send money or gift cards. Throw it away or shred it. If you already responded, tap “I got a scam. What now?” on the Help screen for the exact steps.

Can MailPal be wrong?

Yes, sometimes. It is very good but not perfect. If something is marked “Legit” and still feels wrong, trust your gut: look up the company’s phone number yourself and ask. If MailPal filed something in the wrong tray, open it and tap a different tray under “Filed in”.

How do bill reminders work?

When MailPal reads a bill with a due date printed on it, it sets a reminder on your phone a few days before (you choose how many in Settings). Reminders only use dates that are actually printed on the bill. When you pay, open the bill and tap “I paid this”.

Who can see my mail?

Only you. The photo goes to MailPal’s reader over an encrypted connection and is then thrown away. It is never stored on our servers, never used to train AI, and never sold. If you set up the Family plan, the person watching over you sees only mail flagged as a likely scam, never your bills or personal letters.

Where did my scanned mail go?

It stays on the “Mail” screen, sorted into Needs action, Keep on file, and Tossed. MailPal keeps it for 30 days on the free plan, or up to a year with Premium. You can change that, or clear everything, under Settings → Privacy & scan history.

The words on the screen are too small.

MailPal follows your iPhone’s text size. Open your iPhone Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text, and move the slider. MailPal will use the bigger size. You can also tap “Read aloud” on any piece of mail to hear it.

What is my MailPal ID?

A short code like MP-7K3Q-9XAM, shown under Settings → Your account once you verify your email. It lets a family member or MailPal support help you, for example by gifting you Premium. It can never be used to see your mail.

How much does MailPal cost?

Your first 10 scans every month are free, including scam checks, envelope checks, sorting, and read-aloud. Premium removes the limit and adds bill reminders, the Family plan, and a year of history, for $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year through the App Store. The monthly plan starts with 7 days free: if you cancel before the 7 days are up you pay nothing, otherwise it continues at $4.99 a month. MailPal reminds you two days before the trial ends. Cancel anytime in your App Store settings. If a family member or MailPal gave you Premium, it shows as “Premium (gift)” and costs nothing.

Subscriptions

Premium is billed by Apple. To cancel or change plans, open your iPhone's Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then MailPal. For refunds, use reportaproblem.apple.com. Bought Premium before and it's missing? In MailPal, go to Settings and tap Restore purchases.

Delete your account

In MailPal, go to Settings, then Delete account. This permanently removes your account and data from our server and your phone. If you subscribe, cancel in your App Store settings too.
